Garrett has trained dogs for more than twenty years, and has bred, trained, and trialed his American Bulldogs in conformation, obedience, and protection sports over the course of his career. He wrote Building A Solid Canine, the forty-two-chapter book every workshop, evaluation, and in-home session runs on. Every dog he works gets a route through it.

Keeping dogs that heavy in prey and social drive, living together, for that many years takes a deep and clear understanding of dogs. It took handler error and failures to learn from, and every one of them taught him something about social order that he now teaches to other dog owners.

Like most dog trainers, I have loved dogs since I was a kid. The only dog I had growing up was given away when we moved, but I had family with dogs, and that's where I learned how to be with them. I got my own dog after a traumatic robbery, then started acquiring more. I had great control, but they still started fighting. That's when I found a trainer to help me, and he began to mentor me.

I started working protection and competing, then moved on to another mentor who became my partner in a protection training club for over fifteen years, before moving on again to learn from other amazing trainers in the industry. Learning never stops with dogs, and it shouldn't, if you're trying to reach higher levels with yours. After a long career I'm excited to teach more than train. But I still have goals for my own dogs.
